A BRIEF COMMENTARY ON "JANE EYRE"

Both the novel and the movie show out some important features of the Victorian Age and the Puritan mind. In fact, there is a severe sense of duty within most of the characters. Moral inflexibility is a leading value in this society, as we can see, for example, with the corporal punishments in the boarding school and in St. John's intention to marry Jane, even if he does not truly love her. Therefore, in the middle of this historical setting, the so-called "Victorian compromise" is easily noticeable: a woman, if really conformed to its unfairness, was to become "without feelings".

However, Jane's deepest nature is strongly against those cultural surroundings. A clear reference to Romanticism is heavily present, not only in the characters of Jane and Mr. Rochester, who are "passionate", but also in the natural setting of Thornfield and in the wide landscapes that enclose it, that are the forest and the moors, depicted according to the romantic concept of "sublime".

"It agitates me to pain that the skyline over there is ever our limit" says Jane at a certain point; here lies that whole struggle between emotion and moral duty, which holds the most profound meaning of the story.

Let's change something

At the end of the film Jane Eyre went back to her real love,Rochester,and she found him blind,under a big, old tree. So they could live happily  togheter united by their love. 

We don't like this ending, so we have thought to change it and rewrite the story of Jane's life.

Here it is:

Jane discovered she had become really rich, so she decided to share her heredity with her new "brother and sisters", her cousins in reality, who had helped her after she ran away from Thornbridge.

St. John, the brother, proposed her to go to India as a  missionary.

It was a cold, sunny day, they were in a beatiful, green  scented garden.That place seemed perfect,everything was in quietness and harmony,there weren't any noises. Even if they weren't really in love,he knelt down in front of her...and there, after a moment, he asked her:"will you marry me?"

Jane was  astonished, she couldn't believe those words, but after a first moment  she answered:" yes,I will".That was one of the biggest mistakes of her life, because  they weren't really in love. They were both lying to themselves, because  they wanted to travel in India, and they needed to unite their money.

So they left and they decided to get marryed once they were in India. They discovered new places and felt new emotions, Jane saw her first city and knew a lot of new people, but altough her mind was full, her heart was empty.

She had everything, she had a big house, a factory, but one day St. John got angry and the worst part of his soul came out, and he began to beat Jane. He was emotionally unstable, so every time that they talked, the situation worsened.

The day before her marriage, she decided to change her plans, she understood that she needed love, true love, so for the second time she ran away and went back to Thornsfield.

But there was a new problem: in  the village one of Rochester's servants told her what had happened: her love, Rochester, had died in a big fire. Now she felt  lonely, again. But the servant told her that a part of her love was alive again: Edward's adoptive daughter, Adele, had survived.

So Jane decided to begin a new life with Adele, but now they were without money. Jane found a work as teacher in a orphanage, all the children loved her, she was really good, and now,finally happy.

Si ricorda che:
• non sono ammessi concorrenti bilingui; (intendiamo per “bilingue” chi usa e parla normalmente la
lingua inglese così come la propria lingua madre.)
• possono iscriversi solo scuole statali o parificate con sede sul territorio nazionale, non internazionali,
statali o parificate;
• il numero minimo di partecipanti per istituto è di 15, anche di scolarità differenti;
• la quota d’iscrizione è di 8,00 euro per partecipante;
• a tutti i concorrenti verrà rilasciato attestato di partecipazione;
• i concorrenti sono suddivisi in 4 categorie;
• nella prima fase i concorrenti affrontano quesiti corrispondenti ai livelli del CEFR: A1 per JOEY, A2
per WALLABY, B1 per GREY KANGAROO e B2 per RED KANGAROO;
• alla seconda fase (semifinale) i livelli sono contaminati da un piccolo numero di quesiti di livello
superiore; (ad esempio i concorrenti JOEY affronteranno quesiti per lo più A1 con qualche quesito di

The Hours: life is a choice

Time, time can be the keyword to describe “The Hours”. Not only because of the title itself but also because of the conception of time that is incredibly well balanced in this movie.

In within the span of a day, in fact, are narrated the stories of three different women that are living in three different years. The only moment where this pattern is not followed is at the very beginning of the movie where we see Virginia Woolf (Nicole Kidman) that commits suicide and we know that happened in 1941.

The first plot follows the life of the famous English writer while she is working on her book “Mrs. Dalloway”, Virginia is in Richmond and she has been sent there by the doctors because she has fallen into depression and they think that she’s going to feel better once she will be out of the crowded London.

In the meanwhile the audience follow also the life of the housewife Laura Brown (Julianne Moore), she lives in Los Angeles and she’s pregnant of her second child, she doesn’t feel good in the place where she lives and she feels oppressed in the life she’s conducing.
The third story is settled in 2001, New York City. Here the protagonist is Clarissa Vaughan (Maryl Streep) and she is organizing a party to celebrate her good friend Richard (Ed Harris), a novelist who won a major literary award.

The lives of the three women are so far apart in time and in history and yet they are so close if we consider their way of thinking and behaving. “Mrs. Dalloway” is the element that works as a link between the stories; Virginia is writing the book, Laura is reading it and Richard gave Clarissa the nickname “Mrs. Dalloway” because she focuses herself on the life of other people to get distracted from her own existence. Richard himself connects the second and the modern plot more than what we can think, only near to the end we find out that he’s the first son of Laura and that he has been abandoned by his mom because she decides, after attempting suicide, to leave her family. “I chose life” she says when she explains her story to Clarissa. Life is a choice then, like death is.
While Virginia chose death (“If it is a choice between Richmond and death, I choose death”) and Laura chose life, Clarissa is mourning the death of Richard, he commits in fact suicide before taking part to the party she organized for him. He lived until then because he knew Clarissa wasn’t able to get over his death. “That’s what we do. That is what people do. They stay alive for each other”, she says in a conversation with him. But, once he realized that he couldn’t stand anymore the pain that AIDS was causing him, he decides to end his sufferance. He says “I’ve stayed alive for you. But now you have to let me go” before jumping out the window of his flat.

It’s curious how quotations from Virginia’s story justify what happens in other plots, for example, in a conversation with her husband Virginia says “Someone has to die in order that the rest of us should value life more”, she is talking about her book “Mrs. Dalloway” but if we take that phrase and we put it more in a global vision of the movie we can see how it can work even to describe how Clarissa’s situation can change after Richard’s death. Clarissa should, then, value life more than what she used to, “she’s confident, everyone thinks she’s fine.. but she isn’t” now she has no one else to take care of but herself, and she must take her position in life.
I really liked the movie, even though I thought that some parts were just superfluous because they were adding details to the story without changing in any way the plot. I liked how the movie was structured. I was able to follow all the stories without getting confused, not only because of the awesome control of the setting, the clothing and the photography, that were visually specifying in which story we were being the audience of, but also because I was interested in knowing how all the stories were developing.
I could identify myself in all the three women, not completely in all of them but partially in each of them. My favorite character though is Leonard (Stephen Dillane), Virginia’s husband. He really loves her and he tries everything to make her feel better even though what he tries is not enough. He sometimes reminds me of Clarissa because in the way she tries to save Richard, he has tried to save Virginia. And they both survived the death of someone they really love. I think there is nothing worse than surviving the death of a loved one, especially when they commit suicide. I would feel like I haven’t done enough to save them, I would feel miserable. I admire how they had the courage to keep living.
Life is really a choice, and sometimes we forget how easy it is to get lost in this world. Sometimes is hard to remember how beautiful life is, especially in times where everything we do seems not to have a meaning. Life is a choice, and we must choose to live it for ourselves, not because we have to be selfish, but because we are the only ones that know what we are going through, we are the only ones that know what we are able to do, and we are the only ones able to make that choice of living. We can live for someone else, because nothing is more beautiful then loving someone and being loved but.. before that, we have to feel good with ourselves, because we are always going to be with our mind and our thoughts, we can’t be divided from who we are. Peace can be found, in every second, every minute, every hour of our life.

OUR MORNING WITH AMERICAN STUDENTS

(IV B Scientifico)

As soon as we got seated inside Syracuse University, in Florence, we started talking quite fluently with the American girls we were put in a group with, even if some of us were shy, or even frightened, at first. This way we met Nadia, from Chicago, and Alicia, from the State of Ohio. After we all had introduced ourselves, the conversation turned out very funny, in fact our group was laughing a lot more than the others! We made fun of each other about our unlucky love stories (for example, when Nadia said that she wanted a "break" from men, we asked her if that was because she preferred watching Netflix, a very popular American tv channel we had previously talked about). we also learnt a lot about each other life styles, we discussed what we like and dislike and talked about many other different things, including the money Nadia and Alicia spend to be studying in Florence (something like twenty thousand dollars!). Obviously, the time ran out too quickly: we had such a good time that we all were upset to say goodbye, but promised to keep in touch!

If we had known that the American students we had to meet were so awesome and funny, we would have accepted the proposal of this experience immediately, without any doubts!

Two athletic boys and an artistic girl shocked our morning!

After some initial hesitation we began to laugh and smile with a crucial fight: ITALIAN WINE vs AMERICAN BEER.

At the end the winner was Italian food and drink, so we changed topic e talked about American fashion, colleges and parties.

They told us that American is different from Italian life and from what TV shows us, too. For example they said that American clothes are always full of colors, while in Italy people wear standard colors according to the seasons.

We talked also about transports; the most curious thing is that  Americans  can drive a car when they are sixteen and they go everywhere by car because motorbikes or public transports are unpopular.

After some hours with them , having found we can speak English almost as well as them, we realized we would have better chances to survive in America than they have

in Italy.

At the beginning  of the conversation the American students were shy  but after showing us the pictures of  their family  and pets, they became friendly. The boys talked about the differences between Italian and American life: in America holidays start in June and finish in October, lucky them!

These students live in Italian families and they have to call their landlords 'mother' and 'father'. They can't watch TV because there isn't one in the house they live.

While they were talking about TV programs, we noticed that the same

programs have a different name, for example the famous USA show ''Family Guy'' is called ''Griffin''in Italy.

At the end, they showed us their notebooks with a lot of English words and the Italian translation they had asked us. We felt superior because we hadn't needed any help.

We were sitting in front of them, our faces looked like theirs: we all were scared because we thought we couldn't speak the others' language in an understable way. Kate and Kelly, the American girls, asked us our name. While the conversation went on we began to feel more confident and the fear of making mistakes almost went away. One of the girls lives in Texas and the other in New-York, they were very sociable and friendly. They surprised us with a few things for example they said that the people that is hosting them in Italy are as parents and they call them "Italian Mum and Dad". They told us that they attend school from Monday to Thursday and the rest of the week they travel around Europe. The funniest thing that they told us was that they found difficulty in our eating habits. "American breakfast is very plentiful we eat bacon,  sandwiches, milk, pancakes..." Kate said smiling "while Italian breakfast is only milk and cookies... in America we have dinner at 6 p.m. but in Italy I have dinner at 9 p.m. so I'm always hungry". This experience taught us to believe in ourselves, and left us the desire to learn other cultures, maybe by travelling and studying in other countries.

 The Story of Jack

It was the night of 31st October and Jack was walking to a Halloween party. Suddenly he stumbled against something that looked like a stone and he fell down. While he was on the ground, he turned and saw a strange think, he dug with his hands and he found a head. He panicked and looked around: he realized he was in a graveyard. Something caught his ankle: it was a hand. Jack ran away scared and he took shelter in an empty house. He looked out of the window and saw the graveyard full of zombies. Suddenly in the fog he saw a headless man riding a black horse. The man was holding his head with his right hand, it was the head Jack had seen before. The horseman was riding towards him. Jack thought that his life had come to an end, when he saw a door behind him. It led outside and as soon as he was out, he started running, but the horseman followed him. Jack understood that his only hope of survival was crossing the river, because there were lights, on the other bank. He managed to swim across but when he reached the other bank the horseman threw the head he was holding towards him. When it hit Jack, the head exploded and Jack disappeared in the smoke. No news about him have been heard since. Somebody thinks that he went to another part of the world. Somebody thinks that he became the slave of the headless horseman. His end is unknown, it is the mystery of the village where he lived.

      A Scary Halloween story 

A few years ago, I lived in a suburb close to the little town of Wightown where I worked as an apprentice for mister Host G. who had a carpenter work-shop. He was rich, honest and generous. It was a few days before Halloween and the children were very excited. One morning a foreigner came into in the shop, asking me to make a hundred boxes of different seizes to be ready by Halloween. So, without any questions, we confirmed the order. He told me that his name was Jack O. He thanked me and he left. The following days I worked hard and I finished the order at 6 p.m. on the day of Halloween. Mister Jack O. arrived just before closing time. He loaded the boxes into a big van. After a short time he came back to pay me. He took his wallet out and in that moment a lightening caused a blackout. I found the lantern under the work-bench and turned it on. The foreigner had disappeared, but I found the money for my hard work on the table. The magical disappearance of mister Jack O. left me breathless.

The time had come to close. Outside an icy air had fallen on the streets of the suburb and I was looking forward to getting home. After dinner, the doorbell rang. I opened the door and immediately a child  10-11 years old, dressed as a monkey, asked me: - Trick or treat? I threw some sweets into his bag. A lot of children arrived that evening and I was very happy to give them sweets. It was 11:30 p.m. so I decided to go to bed. I was falling asleep when the doorbell rang again. I went to see who was, thinking it was another child. I opened the door and Mr. Jack O. appeared in front of me and, without saying anything, he took off the ghost costume. He was a man, a human being. I had thought he was a ghost like me and all the inhabitants of that suburb. So he rubbed a magic lamp and suddenly I was sucked into it.

I woke up later, in a crate. Without thinking much, I took a match and lit it, by rubbing it on the wood. The light fell on a sign; It read: - Host G.’s Carpenter. I had made those boxes. Mr. Jack O., however, wasn’t very prudent as he did not consider that we ghosts can pass through the material. So it was very easy to go through the crates. I discovered I was in a large room of an old abandoned house with my neighbors. We decided together to wait for Mr. Jack O. in the haunted house. After some hours, Mr. Jack O. came into the house expecting to find all the ghosts trapped. We went out of our hiding places and began to scream, to make confusion with scary noises, frightening him to death. Terrified, he began to run around the room and then ran away screaming like a child. The cruel Mr. Jack O. wanted to take over the city but he wasn’t successful. 

It was a terrifying memorable Halloween night.

Soft Pumpkin Cake

Ingredients

Pumkin Pulp: 500 g

Sugar: 35 g

Rosemary: 10 g

Egg: n. 3

Sunflower Seed Oil: 150 ml

Brown Sugar: 150 g

Flour 00: 175 g

Almond Flour: 75 g

Milk: 100 ml

Baking Powder: 16 g

Cinnamon: 2 g

Ground Hazelnuts: 150 g.

Remove the seeds from the pumpkin pulp with a knife. Cut it into slices.

Put them into a baking tin with partchment paper and put a sprig of rosemary for each slices. Sprinkle with sugar. Cook it in an pre-heated oven at 180°C for 60 minuts. Open the oven and remove the sprigs of rosemary. Press the pumpkin in a sieve, because the water must go out.

Put the eggs in a bowl, add the brown sugar and mix until it dissolves. Add the almond flour.

Mix the flour with the baking powder in it with the eggs, add sunflower seed oil and continue mixing till is is smooth.

Now pour the milk and continue to mix, add the ground hazelnuts in the end.

Pour into a baking tin ( 24 cm diameter). Cook in a pre-heated oven at 160 °C for 40 minuts.

Serve warm.

Halloween derives from "All Allows Day". The origins of that celebration goes back to the ancient Celts. In fact, their druids honored Samhain, the god of the death.

The Celts believed that the dead, led by Samhain, went out of their graves on the night of the 31st October. So the living were afraid of them, and they dressed in scary costumes to frighten the spirits.

After the Roman invasion, Halloween became a harvest festival. The colours of Halloween are in fact orange (that represents the harvest), and black (that represents the death).

"All Allows Day" was first important in Ireland and Scotland, and then it was brought to the USA by the Irish immigrants.

The legend of Jack O'Lantern

A man called Jack, who lived in Ireland and who was known for his drunkenness, one day went to a pub, where he met the Devil.

The Devil wanted his soul, but Jack asked him one more drink without having the money to pay. So the Devil became a coin, Jack trapped him into his pocket, and he let him free on the condition of having one more year of life.

One year later he trapped the Devil again and the Devil had to promise to let him ten more years of life.

When Jack died, he wasn't accepted in Heaven nor in Hell, because the Devil had recognised him.

However, the Devil gave him a piece of a coal that Jack put into a turnip to use it as a lantern.

On Halloween night, in the USA they couldn't celebrate with a turnip, because there were no turnips there. So people started using pumpkins as lanterns; that's why pumpkins are still symbols of this famous celebration.

• Legendary magician Harry Houdini died in Detroit of gangrene and peritonitis resulting from a ruptured appendix on Halloween in 1926.
• Vampires think Halloween is tacky and don't bother going around that night.
• Halloween is second only to Christmas in spending. Consumers will spend over $2.5 Billion during Halloween. That's a whole lot of candy, costumes, decorations and party goods.
• People have believed for centuries that light keeps away ghosts and ghouls. Making a pumpkin lantern with a candle inside may keep you safe from all the spooky spirits flying around on Halloween.

How to make your halloween pumpkin:

For creating the best Halloween atmosphere you must show your shiny pumpkin!

Here you’ll learn how to carve the famous “Jack O’Lantern”; it’s not difficult, you need only this things:

• a spoon or an ice-cream scoop;
• a knife with long and sharp blade;
• some newspapers;
• a pumpkin (obviously).

STEP 1:

With your knife, cut away the top of the pumpkin.

The hole must be big enough to crave the inner part by hand, whit the spoon. The cut must be pentagonal or hexagonal (not circular), so it will be easier.

Clean the cap of the pumpkin, so you’ll be able to use it as a blug. Then, with the spoon scrape the inner walls of the pumpkin for cleaning from the filaments.

STEP 2:

Search the better part of the pumpkin for carving the face. Now use carefully the knife for scratching the single parts of the face (if you want, you can sign the face with a pencil before the scratching).

When you have finished to cut, peel back the leavings.

STEP 3:

Check if the bottom is fit to put a candle on it.

Now you’re ready to light you Jack O’Lantern for the Halloween night!

These are the colours of the mistery.

Orange is the decourated pumpkin for the party

That menacing  looks out the window.

 Orange is the sweet of the tradition

 I’ll devour it all in one bite.

Green is the bad monsters’ colour

They roam the streets mingling with the alives.

Green is the colour of the soup

That the whitch compouds in the big pot.

Black is the vampire’s mantle

He wraps an himself when he goes out.

Black are the cat, the spider and the crow

That they’re whooping at me with scowl.

Red fire is the small devil

Horns, tail and tuft

I prefer go to bed

To being in his sight!

Syracuse University Florence

At about eight o’ clock in the morning, on October the eighth, we were on the train, leaving for Florence … to go to the University of Syracuse, a real American University in Tuscany!!

The Syracuse University is an American University which is set in Florence. The centre of the Campus is Villa Rossa in Piazza Savonarola. Only American students can study there. This University is one of the oldest and with well known study programs in Italy. There are many courses which are divided into other departments, such as Architecture, Art, Humanities, Social Sciences, Business, of course all in Italian. Most of the students live in families in Florence as home- stays. Their lessons begin on Monday and finish on Thursday; so students can go on excursions organized by the University itself during the weekend.

Our teachers and the Syracuse University’s ones divided us in small groups of four or five people: two Italians and three Americans. In the morning we talked for two hours to some students belonging to a class and in the afternoon, after a small break, with others. The American students, who have been studying Italian for a month, had prepared for us some questions, so that we could answer, helping them learn some new words and expressions. However we also spoke English and we had the opportunity to improve our language skill.

Wow!! Chatting with other foreign people is a great opportunity to discover new cultures, new mentalities and different lifestyles! Being helpful to them while they’re trying to improve their knowledge of the Italian language has been very rewarding to all of us. At the same time they have been very kind, laid back and exuberant. We loved spending time with them, see how their University works, knowing their opinions, interests and how they’re reacting in a new country. We all think that in the future we could be inspired by them, possibly living an experience like theirs.

At the beginning we had some difficulties on “breaking the ice”, but then it was like we were talking with friends. Maybe it was a bit hard to understand the different American accents, and there were some misunderstandings, but we all ended up laughing a lot. We had a good experience, we improved our English and we met new people with different cultures and with different ideas. We hope that other students might have an experience like ours, talking with the students of the Syracuse University, because it’s a fun, satisfying and useful activity!
